To extend the guided pathways work Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) has undertaken through Completion by Design, the college has incorporated numerous software systems. Those systems include Ad Astra Platinum Analytics™ and Higher Education Scheduling Index (HESI™). GTCC uses these systems to facilitate the collection and analysis of data regarding course demand and scheduling.
Now in its fifth year of participation in Completion by Design, GTCC has implemented redesigned plans for all programs to provide a more prescriptive, streamlined pathway for students. In addition to aligning programs with industry and transfer needs, GTCC has reduced program credit hours, specified electives, and sequenced courses intentionally in semester by semester plans. Now that GTCC has tackled the big picture of program redesign, the college is focusing on details.
Ad Astra has helped GTCC determine whether we offer the appropriate number of sections of a course by providing information on fill rates and how those rates correspond to targets. Department and division chairs use data from Ad Astra to adjust schedule offerings for the current semester and to plan ahead for future semesters. As the college inputs more data into the system, Ad Astra is able to make more accurate recommendations.
GTCC can track which individual students require certain courses to complete their degree. As a supplement to our college-wide proactive advising process, departmental faculty use information from Ad Astra to contact students and emphasize the need to complete specific courses.
Using a variety of data from multiple sources provides a more comprehensive view of course scheduling, space utilization, and student registration. Through the incorporation of analytics and a process of continual improvement, GTCC is further refining guided pathways to accelerate students toward completion.
